Artistic Journey: From Minnesota to Castle Rock, CO
My story starts in Minnesota's picturesque outdoors, where the beauty of nature ignited my creative spark. Family adventures, especially those with my grandparents in the Southwest, filled me with awe and inspiration, merging the tranquility of Minnesota with the Southwest's wild heart into my artistic palette.
Drawing courses and a transformative art teaching stint in the Philippines expanded my horizons. There, in new cultures and eager students, I explored art's power to connect and inspire. This period wasn't just about teaching; it was about growing as an artist and person, setting the stage for what was to come.
The Beginning of House Portraits
Motherhood brought challenges and joys, pushing me to weave my art into the fabric of daily life. Homes, brimming with stories and memories, became my canvas. What started with family and friends quickly became a passion for capturing each home's unique tale, using ink and watercolors to translate ideas into art.
This personal project eventually turned into a professional endeavor. As I fine-tuned my craft, my artwork found a special place among real estate agents seeking meaningful closing day presents. It wasn't just about showcasing milestones but about celebrating the journey home.
Megan Bakke Today: Artistic Excellence
Now living in Castle Rock, CO, I'm surrounded by the landscapes of my youth, drawing inspiration from the past while creating art that speaks to the present.
I find deep inspiration in both my professional craft and personal passions. When I'm not drawing in my home studio in Castle Rock, I spend as much time outside as possible. I love going on hikes with my family, discovering new places, and taking in the beauty of Colorado.
These adventures often involve collecting rocks and lichen-covered sticks, noticing and appreciating the flora and fauna, and, in turn, becoming the subjects of my own artworks.
Currently, I am building a collection of large-scale watercolor rock paintings, a labor of true love that fills my spare moments.
I want my work to be timely and meaningful. Over the years, I've found a beautiful connection between the house drawings I do for others and the artwork I do for myself. Moments of time or a lifetime of memories can be captured in a small drawing, and I want to spend my life doing just that.
